North Macedonia

North Macedonia is a landlocked country in the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula. The country is bordered by Albania (west), Greece (south), Bulgaria (east), Serbia (north), and Kosovo (north).
Geographically, North Macedonia is a mountainous country with a river valley running through the middle to the Aegean Sea. Although most of these mountains are more like large hills at elevation, the country is still fairly inaccessible except along the river valley and along tributary rivers stretching both east and west into the mountains.
North Macedonia`s weather is affected by the Mediterranean currents from the south and the continental currents from the Balkan Peninsula's mountains. These variations make the weather somewhat unpredictable, but the mountainous landscape prevents most extremes.
The diversity of habitats in Macedonia maintains high biodiversity. More than 3700 plant species and 10 000 animal species. In some of the nature parks in the country we can find amazing old-growth beech, coniferous and mixed forests.  These forests are inhabited from Brown Bear, Lynx, Roe Deer, Red Deer, many bats, Chamois, Capercaillie, woodpeckers, owls and many non-vertebrate species.
Birds in North Macedonia are 335 species. Most interesting species here are Imperial Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, both species of pelicans, herons and egrets, Lesser Kestrel, Lanner and Saker falcons, Hazel Grouse, Capercaillie, Boreal Owl, Pygmy Owl, Subalpine and Sardinian Warblers, Rock and Blue Rock Thrushes, Wallcreeper and many more.
Butterflies diversity in rich - Grey Asian Grayling is a very local Balkan endemic, Two-tailed Pasha - probably the most exotic European butterfly, Macedonian Grayling, Eastern Greenish Black-tip, Little Tiger Blue and Balkan Clouded Yellow. Some of the interesting dragonflies are Balkan Goldenring, Black Pennant, Bladetail, White-tailed Skimmer and many more.
